Work with Me
For more than forty years, I’ve worked with people on the challenges of creating, choosing, changing, helping, writing, and living. I’ve done that as a psychotherapist, creativity coach, author, teacher, trainer, and developer of new approaches to helping.
Today, there are several ways we can work together.
You may be looking for a serious conversation about something that matters in your life. You may be a writer or artist trying to create and sustain a creative life. You may have a nonfiction book you want to bring into the world. You may want professional training or certification. Or you may be looking for a speaker, workshop leader, or teacher for your organization or community.
Here are seven ways to work with me.
One
Work with Me as Your Human Experience Specialist
Sometimes what you need does not fit neatly into a category.
You may be facing a decision, a transition, a creative or career challenge, a relationship question, a crisis of meaning, or the feeling that something about your life needs reconsidering. You don’t need a diagnosis, and you don’t need to turn your concern into a “mental health problem” in order for it to deserve serious attention.
My Human Experience Specialist work is a focused one-month engagement: three private conversations, approximately two weeks apart, with email contact between sessions as needed and wanted. We begin with whatever matters most to you and see where the conversation needs to go.
Two
Creativity Coaching
Creativity coaching has been central to my work for decades. I work with writers, visual artists, performers, entrepreneurs, and other creative people on the practical, emotional, and existential challenges of the creative life.
We might work on getting an important project started or finished, overcoming a creative block, developing a more consistent creative practice, handling rejection or self-doubt, making creative career decisions, navigating the marketplace, or reconnecting with a creative identity that has been neglected or interrupted.
Sessions can be booked individually, so you can come for a single focused conversation or work with me over time.
Three
Creativity Coaching Trainings
If you want to learn the principles and practices of creativity coaching—either to help creative people or to become better at coaching yourself—I offer comprehensive online creativity coaching trainings.
These programs draw on decades of work with writers, artists, performers, coaches, and other creative people. They address creative blocks, motivation, productivity, creative anxiety, career challenges, maintaining a creative life, and the practical craft of helping creative people flourish.
Trainings are conducted entirely online, allowing you to participate from anywhere in the world. Scholarships are available.
Four
Professional Certification Programs
For those interested in developing a professional coaching specialty, I have created three comprehensive certification programs in collaboration with Noble Manhattan Coaching.
The Creativity Coach Certificate Program prepares you to work with the distinctive challenges of writers, artists, performers, entrepreneurs, and other creative people.
The Existential Wellness Coach Certificate Program focuses on meaning, purpose, identity, choice, uncertainty, and the fundamental challenges of being human.
The Relationship Coach Certification Program prepares you to help people with communication, intimacy, boundaries, conflict, family dynamics, and other relationship challenges.
These programs are designed both for experienced helping professionals and for people exploring a new professional direction.
Five
Nonfiction Book Coaching
You may have a book in your head, a manuscript underway, years of expertise you want to turn into a book, or a proposal that needs strengthening.
I’ve written more than sixty books and have spent decades helping writers think through the large and small challenges of creating nonfiction. We can work on your book’s central idea, structure, argument, voice, marketability, proposal, author positioning, writing process, or publishing strategy.
My nonfiction book coaching is a three-month engagement that includes three private Zoom sessions, email contact between sessions, and review of selected manuscript, proposal, or planning materials as useful. Our emphasis can remain where it is most needed: on the book’s big idea, structure, distinctiveness, and prospects for reaching its audience.
Six
The Art of Journal Coaching
Journal writing can be more than a private reflective practice. Used skillfully, it can become a powerful way to help people think, discover, decide, grow, and change.
Created with Lynda Monk, Director of the International Association for Journal Writing, The Art of Journal Coaching is a comprehensive self-study program for coaches, therapists, counselors, wellness professionals, workshop leaders, writers, journal enthusiasts, and others interested in purposeful reflective writing.
You’ll learn how to create effective prompts, structure journal coaching experiences, use writing with individuals and groups, and incorporate journal coaching into an existing helping practice—or develop it as a specialty of its own.
Seven
Invite Me to Present or Speak
I speak to organizations, conferences, associations, universities, professional groups, and creative communities around the world.
Current topics include The Difficult Art of Being Human, The Reenchantment of Meaning, The Existential Nomad, The Creative Life, The Future of Helping, Rethinking Mental Health, Meaning and Purpose in Difficult Times, and How to Be Your Own Best Coach.
Presentations can take the form of a keynote, lecture, webinar, interactive workshop, half-day or full-day program, or multi-session series. I’m also happy to develop a presentation specifically for your audience and its needs.
Where Would You Like to Begin?

These seven offerings reflect different parts of a life’s work, but they share a common concern: helping people live, create, choose, grow, and help others with greater awareness and effectiveness.
Some people come to me with a life question. Some with a book. Some with a creative challenge. Some because they want to become better helpers. Some because they want to bring a new conversation to their organization or community.
Take a look at the option that speaks most directly to where you are now. We can begin there.
